About
Ray Chang’s work explores the intersections of movement, mechanics, and perception through kinetic sculpture, experimental animation, and mechanical design. His interdisciplinary practice merges analog techniques with contemporary visual culture, creating immersive experiences that challenge the viewer's understanding of time, space, and the interplay between shadow and light.
Chang’s work is an ongoing investigation into the role of craft and labor in our technologically mediated world, examining how ubiquitous technology shapes our human experience. By re-contextualizing the mechanical processes that drive daily life, his practice engages with the tension between human labor and automation, reflecting on the unseen, often repetitive tasks that shape our worldview and highlighting both the beauty and weariness embedded in these systems.
Chang earned his BFA in Film Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder and his MFA in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts. He has exhibited nationally in spaces such as Automata (Los Angeles) and Mono No Aware (Brooklyn).
